Executive-Targeted Microsoft 365 Extortion Campaign Leverages IT Help Desk Vishing and AitM Token Theft

Threat hunters have detailed a coordinated campaign targeting Microsoft 365 executive accounts. The attack chain begins with vishing calls to IT help desks to socially engineer password resets or MFA enrollment. Following initial access, adversary-in-the-middle (AitM) proxies intercept session tokens, and attackers use residential-proxy sign-ins to mask their origin and evade geolocation-based MFA prompts. The operation primarily targets directors, vice presidents, and other executive staff, resulting in data theft and extortion.

PEEP Toolkit Exploits Chromium Browsers as Post-Compromise Backdoors

Researchers have disclosed details of a Chromium-based post-exploitation toolkit named PEEP. The tool masquerades as a bookmarks extension and is injected directly into browser profiles to bypass Web Store checks and user prompts. By forging Chromium's Secure Preferences, the tool enables post-compromise host command execution on systems where the attacker already holds administrative or code execution access. The disclosure was reported by The Hacker News on September 7, 2026.

OpenAI Tests ChatGPT Writing Style Feature Powered by Connected Apps

OpenAI is reportedly testing a "Writing Style" feature for ChatGPT that analyzes examples from a user's connected personal applications to mimic their unique writing patterns. The feature aims to generate content that reflects the user's individual tone and style. While intended as a productivity tool, security researchers and journalists have flagged that such capabilities could be leveraged for highly convincing phishing, social engineering, and impersonation attacks if the feature is misused or if connected app data is compromised. OpenAI has not confirmed the full scope of data access, storage practices, or user control mechanisms associated with the feature.
