Microsoft Identifies ClickFix as Most Common Initial Access Method Observed Last Year

According to Microsoft's security research, the ClickFix social engineering technique has emerged as the most common initial access method observed by the company's threat research team last year. The attack begins when a visitor lands on a web page displaying a fraudulent CAPTCHA check, instructing the user to prove they are not a robot. While the user reads the instructions, the page quietly places a command on their clipboard. The victim is then guided through opening a terminal and pasting the clipboard content, which executes PowerShell or cmd commands leading to malware installation.

Microsoft reports that this technique accounted for the highest frequency initial access vector observed during the reporting period, enabling subsequent compromise of systems across multiple sectors. The technique has been observed in-the-wild since at least 2024, indicating a sustained and evolving threat landscape.

The attack vector represents a shift toward simpler, repeatable social engineering methods that do not require sophisticated exploits but rely on user interaction to gain initial access to target systems.
